Wasn't at 920 Broad or on Wilbur Ave., so the mayor is not interested.

It's ELECTION TIME. The mayor will be in full body armor heading up a swat team.

It takes a lot of balls to cap somebody at the busiest intersection in town at noon. Maybe they (the criminals) know that the chances of getting caught are pretty slim. Maybe they are on the "Sharpe Team."

They read the paper and know that if you want to do a murder, the best place to do it is in Essex County, specifically in Nwk, where about 2/3 cant write a freakin report.

I heard Curtis Sliwa on the radio this morning, after the news report regarding the Girard Place shooting. Curtis, typically, always trashes Newark and makes extremely negative and slanderous remarks about Mayor James. I'm not a big cheerleader of the Mayor by any fashion, but it always irked me when Curtis does this because I think it isn't helpful to any attempts at encouraging a positive image of Newark. But then that radio station is a propaganda machine for the Bush White House. Curtis was going on about how it isn't even safe for the cops in Newark anymore and that anyone coming to Broad and Market can see how even the police booth has been vandalized with graffiti. This, Curtis stated, was an indication of the utter disrespect that the denizens of Newark have for the NPD.

It was only a matter of time before this happened. The Broad and Market area is rife with hustlers. I walk downtown all the time and hardly ever see NPD's finest walking the beat, even during the work day. NPD occasionally gets out of their cars and the motorcycle squad is very quick to issue tickets to those making an illegal turn at the intersection. Meanwhile, if you're in need of some crack, X, horse, or reefer just respond with a nod to the hand signals. Hell, you can even take advantage of Wednesday's two-for-one sale on guns. And before anyone jumps down my throat, I know that the NPD is overburdened with cracking all of the murder cases on the blotter. Just remember, people, have no fear 'cause the gangstas ain't shooting at you. Besides, Rome wasn't built in a day.

 I want to make sure I'm living in the real world. On the same day there was a drive-by in downtown Newark during the middle of the day, and the day after a cop with a hot trigger blasted another fool, yet ANOTHER cop (one recently promoted at that) was caught doing the wild thing in his car? Hey, was it one of those new cars?
Everything in Newark is falling apart. The Deputy Mayor says we're being HELD HOSTAGE. Chief Clueless says, "Drug dealers have civil liberties too." Jet Ski says it's expensive to hire more cops. And I still can't tell what the he!! Afro Ambrose is saying these days.
NPD GONE WILD. Cops shooting kids. Cops caught in drug selling scandals. Cops escorting mob funerals. Cops caught having sex in cars. And worst of all - cops helping Booker. It's all starting to look like a department that's out of control.
This election may already be irrelevant. There may be nothing to save in Newark at this point. I've become increasingly suspicious that the fix is in on all of us and the best thing we can do is get out from under this Sharpe/Booker dichotomy and just head for the hills. Then again, Chief Bradley told us to do just that last year.
NO MORE TRICKS IN 2006! EVERYONE MUST GO!!!

Broad and Market is bustling with people 24/7 so NPD should have plenty of witnesses and an arrest must be close, right??

Maybe it's time to bring Joe Santiago back. It seems as if "Cops Gone Wild" is escalating in Newark.

Man shot as shoppers take cover in downtown Newark
Saturday, February 04, 2006
BY KATIE WANG
Star-Ledger Staff
Pedestrians and shoppers in downtown Newark scrambled for cover around lunchtime yesterday when shots rang out, striking one man on Market Street.
Newark Police said Alquan McKnight was targeted by the shooter, but authorities do not know why. They have ruled out robbery as a motive.
McKnight, a 23-year-old Newark resident, was shot once in the torso and taken to University Hospital. He was listed in stable condition, authorities said.
The shooting startled store employees who said they heard a succession of loud popping noises after noon. The shooting took place on the busy and packed stretch of Market Street between Halsey and Broad streets.
"People started running," said James Barnes, a security guard at the Conway clothing store on Market Street. "There was a little chaos because nobody knew what was going on."
Eli Lati, a manager of the jewelry store Newark's Best, said he was helping a customer when he heard the gunfire. The shooting occurred on the street in front of the store.
"I thought it was fireworks," Lati said. "Then somebody said, 'Somebody got shot.'"
Investigators roped off the busy intersection for about an hour while they collected evidence and stashed it in brown paper bags. Shoppers and pedestrians paused to watch, many wondering what had happened.
Hector Ramirez, a sales representative at the Sprint store on Market Street, said he is not worried about the violence. He said that last week, someone was stabbed around the corner.
"I guess it's just beef between themselves," Ramirez said.
Newark Police are asking anyone with information to call the Newark Police Robbery Squad at (973) 733-4339.
Katie Wang works in the Essex County bureau. She may be reached at kwang@starledger.com or (973) 392-1504.

Another turkey sammich for Reverand Fraud. What's the total now? 12? 13?
If anyone plans on attending the POMY dinner this November, you better reserve your seats now. By July, there won't be any more room.
Hey Reverend Fraud, seriously, business has been good since the beginning of the year, right?

the kisok at Broad & Market Sts they are so understaffed.
Come on 5 have a heart people have lost their life here.
It is not about business brother it's about those 12 or 13 families having someone to turn to, It's about someone from the Community reaching out to those families in there time of pain , hurt , and lost and give them whatever support you can to them no matter how big or small.
It;s about having the spirit of Dr. King, some say they believe in King, Celebrate Kings life, say they walk and talk Dr. King, but let's not forget Dr. King was Against Violence
So no Yo this ain't about business It's about Life, and now we have several people who was living 2, 3, weeks ago Last Night, and today they are dead because someone shot and Killed them.

TARGET: NEWARK
As a Newark resident who worries about his wife getting home safely every night, I cannot say when I have seen a more irresponsible piece of journalism than the series "Getting away with murder." The January 29th article pointed out that almost half of Essex County's murders result in cold cases or acquittals. As if they needed further incentives, gang members now know what they once merely suspected: Black life is cheap and one can get away with murder in Newark. I doubt very much that the victims were residents of places like Verona and Caldwell. Let us be realistic. We are talking about Newark, not all of Essex County. Newark gets the Jersey Devils, and all of its law-abiding residents catch hell. Way to go Sharpe James!

Irresponsible journalism?
Does that guy think Bloods are home reading the paper, and come to the realization they probably wont be convicted, and THEN decide to go commit a murder?
I think that was an excellent piece that will hopefully force (maybe shame??) the powers that be to take the steps to make the Essex system function like the Bergen system and Middlesex system and Ocean system...

don't be naive.......Unfortunately, many of these gang-members are very bright and intelligent....I say unfortunately because they are not using it for good...I am more than sure that a majority of them are in the gangs because of their environment and not because they initially wanted to....Many were forced into thinking this is their only option to make it out of the hood...and that's by having your family have your back......
They didn't and still don't know any better.
Also keep in mind that the killings and drug dealing is bigger than the the 15 and 16 year old you see outside on the corner with their colors on......So many people on all levels have their hands in the pie....What you see is not always the reality.....
These guys know exactly what is going on......and if they don't Paul Bergrin does,,,,,,,Don't Get it Twisted.....
That is the reason why untli Newark can do an entire overhaul of the people in power in City Hall.....This stuff will never end....."They ain't shootin at me'

I agree 100%. A vote for change in leadership is a leap of faith that things can get better--even against the odds.
On the writer to the Ledger, I think black life is definitely cheaper if they don't report stories like the one they did. How can you fix what you don't face? The belief that things can/will never get better evident in the pessimistic tone of the letter is what needs to be challenged. Covering our eyes and plugging our ears is to capitulate to the increasing gun violence.

But what I got from the letter to the SL was that....the author was/is worried that the article will be like a NEWSFLASH for all criminals to come to Essex County.
But my thing is that these 'Thugs' know the system better than we do. They are in the system all day every day. So you better believe that they know about the rep that Essex County/Newark have.....They don't need an article for that......If anything the article is writing about their stories......
