Baraka’s Non-Endorsement
(taken from the New York Times Blog)
Categories: General, Booker, School Vouchers

Despite a drum roll of endorsements, and a campaign staff heavily stuffed with the mayor’s former insiders, Cory Booker still has vocal opponents here in Newark. And chief among them, perhaps, is Amiri Baraka, the former state poet laureate whose job was eliminated after he gave a reading of a poem implying that Israel knew in advance about the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Mr. Baraka, 71, has spent most of his life here in the city, and his often-militant approach to urban issues is well-known. In an interview today, he said he is still unhappy about the negative advertisements the Booker Team sent out criticizing his son, Ras Baraka, a member of the Municipal Council who is running for an at-large seat.

He said he is even more unsatisfied with Mr. Booker’s support of school vouchers, and his plan to try to combat gang violence mainly by adding more police to the streets. So far, he said, he had refrained from attacking Booker, to keep the race clean. But it was becoming more difficult to stay silent, he said.

“Personally, I think he’s a Republican — a closet Republican,” Mr. Baraka said. “His stance on vouchers and his solution to violence in the city – just add police – doesn’t make sense. I don’t like the vagueness of what he says.”

First, let’s start at the beginning of this slasher piece from a poet (not a policy maker). Amiri doesn’t have any special insight on how to solve the problems in Newark. He is, and always will be,just a poet. He is a member in good standing of that tiny, weird subculture of people that write poetry. That’s all.

Now I love the way he tries to call Booker a “closet Republican.” Amazing that he is now a defender of the chief person that’s in the closet. The old man then goes on to say that Cory supports vouchers. Of course, no where to be mentioned was whether WhichWhack High’s 680 average SAT score was acceptable. The man that is ONLY a poet also didn’t mention anything on whether or not the WhickWhack 70% backdoor SRA graduation scheme was acceptable.

Think about that gang. To these nut jobs, any proposal to hold public schools accountable is more scary to them than the horrible outcomes that are actually taking place. And also notice something else missing from Who Say: not ONE MENTION on when the NPS would get better.

Who Say then goes on to try to caricature Cory’s proposal for increasing safety. Now even though Deputy Mayor Rice says we’re being “held hostage”, the poet then goes on to say that Cory just “wants to add more police.” Now when did Cory Booker EVER SAY he just wanted to “add more police” as his ONLY policy? When? Simply put, Who Say is lying! Period.

Also notice that Mr. Me Say They Say didn’t mention anything about the growing gangs in Newark; no mention about the highly successful gang truce - you know, the one that kept murder from only going up 40% in the last four years; no mention about the 80 MILLION DOLLAR SLUSH FUNDS; no mention about ethics and those politicians that have systematically used their public office for private gain. Instead, Amiri is only having dreams of Booker.

Amiri is now just an old man whose time has come and gone. Sorry pal - you don’t have any special fountain of knowledge, and we surely don’t have to worship a poet. I recommend that you stick to trying to rhyme on paper. You can do that at times.

Hey Who Say - ask your son if he has operatives video taping and spying on Booker events in the South Ward? That's very Hooverish don't you think? What you think, Mr. They Say, if there were doing that?

You people... I mean some of you people are truly pathetic. The "Scheme Machine" was was right out of the Karl Rove "McCain got an illegitemate Black baby" used in the SC Republican Primary. Oh and John Kerry is no war Hero even though he got shot in the war. So Please never equate Ras to George Bush. So what the posters say re-elect... is that a real issue. you just diverted from evrything that Imamu Baraka said. But that is another GWB/Karl Rove Tactic. Oh It is so clear... in fact using this website to attack Ras is something akin. Oh it is so clear. you people have no ground to stand on.

Funding an 80 MILLION DOLLAR SLUSH FUND to two organizations that don't exist with no rules or criterion is right out of the Sharpe James fiscal scheme playbook.

1. Why now?
2. Why 80M?
3. Why in 48 hours?

No amount of spin can distract Newarkers from this attempted mega-heist. Sorry you boys were caught. Even the Gov shut down your scheme. You might not be able to get away with this one, Chief. Was it worth it?

There is no slush fund... point blank period. You can keep rehashing it as much as you want not going to change that. He came on here and told what he voted for... you disagree fine. talk about something else. The elected officials serve only while they are elected. no money is going to anyone retirement. and furthermore where is your proof? I mean you know things 5 so why dont you present some evidence and stop with the lies, rumors and innuendo.

Both corporations were filed on March 1, 2006.

The Incorporators of the Newark Redevelopment Trust Fund, Inc. are Hon. Sharpe James, Gustav Heningburg and Gabriella Morris ($50 million).

Attached as part of the filing is “Exhibit 1” which states:
The general purposes of this Corporation are to promote the common good and general welfare of the City of Newark (the: City”) and of its inhabitants and businesses through civic betterment, cultural and educational opportunities and social and economic improvements, and as further described in the Corporation’s Certificate of Incorporation. These purposes may include, not by way of limitation or enlargement but solely for purposes of illustration, redevelopment and rehabilitation of property located within the City, construction of buildings, park improvements, waterfront and waterway improvements and the processing, approval and distribution of grant money and loan proceeds for like purposes.

The Incorporators for the Newark Neighborhood and Recreation Trust Fund, Inc. are Hon. Sharpe James, Donald Bradley, and Carolyn Wallace ($30 million). All three incorporators are from the South Ward of Newark. The stated purpose is the same for both corporations.

The bylaws for the corporations are not available but I suspect that the Corporate Board retains the right to fill vacancies by “some” majority vote. I also suspect that the ruse of putting City council folk on the Boards of these corporations was merely a pacification strategy also intended to give the appearance of public oversight. We will probably learn at some point that the council folk were named as individuals and the seats are therefore not Council seats. The same is most likely the case for the mayor. Therefore, should any of the elected officials serving on the boards of these corporations loose their seats in the May 9th election they will continue to control $80 million of taxpayer money. In short, they have given “themselves” $80 million. It’s a broad daylight robbery.

I would also bet there are no provisions to prevent any of these officials from becoming employees or consultants to these corporations once they leave office.

Gustav Heningburg is the registered agent for both corporations. His signature appears on both incorporating documents dated February 28, 2006.

This is the Al Faiella model. It's a great con.

Looks and smells like SLUSH to me.

BTW

Pathetic is:

Standing on the back of the deceased and pounding your chest. “Mr. Councilman Sir yes Sir”

Asking the public to re-elect you when they did not elect you in the first place.

Voting for a SLUSH FUND … then backing into it with lies and alibis.

There are kids everyday being failed by the NPS. Ironically (??), our Councilman at Large is also a principal of one of these schools. No doubt his father would like to continue to see him employed.

Parents need to be hopeful about the education of their children if Newark is to become a "destination" city. Why should poor parents face a false choice of illegally enrolling their kids in an adjoining district OR sending them to a demonstrably failed school system?

This ranking is somewhat dated, but look where Weequahic High and other Newark schools rank -- the bottom five schools are Newark's!
