"There are ONLY three places hiring Newark residents for middle-class jobs - the housing authority, board of education and City Hall."
You know what's scary, RAHMAN IS CORRECT. Our all-Republican council has practiced corproate welfare and very little of it has "trickled down" to Newarkers.

The bottom line is that you cannot FORCE companies who are in your city or move to your city to hire residents. That is why the current trend of large companies is to MOVE their headquarters offshore and operations overseas where they can avoid paying U.S. taxes and get employees for pennies in China, Indonesia and numerous other third world and central american countries.
America is powerless to stop this and its effects are especially seen in large urban centers such as Newark. Companies building homes hire foreign and central American workers for the following reasons 1: they work for next to nothing, 2: they don't complain because they would be fired or reported to INS on the spot, 3: they won't sue because they aren't citizens or savy to our system, 4: they work without any of our AMERICAN perks (ie: 15 min smoke breaks, pensions, 401ks, hazard safety regulations, et al.), 5: and if they die on the job it is inconsequential, as was the case during the construction of a FBI building, where an immigrant was killed by pipes falling off of a truck because the company was to lazy to properly use a crane to pick the beams from the truck, but instead had the immigrant cut the strap-down ropes.
NYC currently has an over 50% unemployment rate for African-American males. This is in spite of it being viewed as one of the largest job markets in the nation, Bloomberg being a billionaire, and a plethora of jobs where AA males could be employed.
Overall, companies have been making every attempt to ignore African American, AS WELL AS American workers PERIOD when they have such a ripe market of illegal aliens working under sweatshop conditions for a dime.
I've said it before, "SWEATSHOPS ARE LEGAL AGAIN: ONSHORE, OFFSHORE AND OVERSEAS"

According to Time Magazine, 4,000 illegal aliens cross the Mexican border in a single day. 4,000 times 365 days equals 1,460,000 yearly! Other than Band-Aid tactics, the Feds aren't really serious about addressing this issue because corporate America benefits from cheap labor. You are correct that this situation has encouraged anew a sweat shop culture. Witness how Wal-Mart locked their illegal alien maintenance workers inside of their stores overnight.

The 5Reasons Guide for Newarkers on How to Find a Job
1. Create two resumes. One with a Newark address and one from an “integrated” community (preferably out of Essex County altogether). If you do not have a relative that lives in an integrated community, instead of using the word “Newark” on your resume, use your neighborhood (ex. Ironbound, Forrest Hills, Vailsburg). This will probably throw the HR sorting goon off the trail. If you are applying to the Newark BOE, UMDNJ, City Hall, NHA, NCC, Essex County Government or Prudential (they do a good job), then use the Newark address. For all other jobs, whether inside or outside of the city, use your integrated community address.
2. Change your driver’s license to an out of city address. When you get a job offer, they usually ask for a copy of your DL. There’s no need to falter in pulling off the ruse by showing a DL with the word “Newark” on it. Your integrated community address also has the added benefit of getting slightly better treatment from the cops when you get racially profiled and pulled over.
3. If your name sounds to black ethnic (you know, Shanaynay, Shamique, etc.) seriously consider changing your official name (it’s not that expensive.). If you don’t want to do that, then DEFINITELY go with your initial as your name, if you have a better sounding middle name. For example, if your name is Kareem Robert Harrison, try using K. Robert Harrison. You can probably even get away with K.R. Harrison. If an employer forces you to say your name during an interview, mumble it and act ashamed. Obviously, put your most integrated sounding name on your resume.
4. Braids are NO, NO for men. And, multicolored hair (you know, blue and red weaves) are nonstarters for women.
5. When interviewing and someone asks where you grew up, try NOT to say the word Newark. If you have to say the word Newark, immediately follow the word Newark with the phrase “I moved out when I was …..(fill in the blank – but try to make it less than 12).
As Biggie would say, “Follow these rules, you’ll have mad bread to break up…..”

However, the change of DL address might be problematical, what with the new "Homeland Security" DL requirements in Jersey.

So this is what White Corporate America has forced us to do with ourselves. We now have to be ashamed of a culture that is so rich with history and identity. We have to walk around and hide our true selves just to be able to make an ATTEMPT at being on an even playing field with our white counterparts. In the year 2004 we still have to feel inferior walking in the streets, driving down the highway, and even sitting in your office or classroom.
As a community (especially this forum), what do have to do to make our ancestor's struggles worth while. I definitely don't feel as though we should just bow down and accept it. We should be proud to be called tyrone, we should be proud to live in Newark and it pisses me off wheneve we can't because we are looked down upon.
Once again, as a community, we have to take some responsiblity to the way we are treated. Can we really expect outsiders to respect us and this city if we don't have respect for it? Yeah sure, a lot of what goes on in this city from the drugs, prostitution, and gangbangin is a consequence of the lack of support from our leaders, but I see it way to often young Afircan Americans trying to take the shortcut as oppose to going through the struggle and actually feeling proud of your accomplishments.
Something has to be done...
Like Tupac we have to adopt the Thug Life Mentality.
I had to comeback with the Biggie quote!! I know 5reasons can appreciate this.
Let me know if I have to explain that, because I had a different definition for Thug Life before I saw "Resurrection"

When Tupac used the phrase thug life ( as he explains it), it was more like a term of empowerment.
He was fed up with the conditions that were going on in the ghetto and wanted blacks to ban together and stand up for whatever they believed in. Similar to how the Black Panthers took up legal arms to protect and help their brothers and sisters.
When he used "Thug Life", it wasn't to be used to label a gangbanger or hood in the street, but rather to label or describe a way of life for so many people in this country. People who can't afford to feed their kids, people working three jobs just to keep the light on in the house, people who thought they had no other options and sold drugs to feed their families.
To 2Pac...THUG LIFE was a movement similar to "Black Power"

While the worthy president of his Union is absolutely correct, he left out the County, State and Federal governments as historically rare places of job opportunities for people of color. Civil Service testing is, despite politicians' attempts to skirt the process with the rule of three and manipulating titles and requirements, the best way to keep the governmental hiring process equitable.

Pac was very intelligent. Many whites and Blacks misunderstood Pac and that's how Pac divided the conscious from the un-conscious. He was too deep for many especially those who heard Thug Life and misunderstood it's meaning. His use of Machiaveli as well still to this day f's "lay peoples" heads up. Why or how is this "thug" speaking about a philosphy that guided King. Queens, Rulers, Presidents, Mayors and Councilpeople for centuries.
You know how many kids I know who know who Nicolo Machiaveli is and who have read The Prince. This is all due to Pac.
One of my favorite Tupac creations:
Words Of Wisdom (1991)
Killing us one by one
In one way or another Amerika will find a way to eliminate the problem
One by one
The problem is the troublesome Black youth of the ghetto
And one by one
We are being wiped off the face of this earth
At an extremely alarming rate
And even more alarming is the fact
That we are not fighting back ...
This is for the masses
The lower classes
The ones you left out
Jobs were given,
Better livin'
But we were kept out
Made to feel inferior
But we're superior
Break the chains
In our brains
That made us fear ya'
Pledge allegiance to a flag that neglects us
Honor a man that refused to respect us
Emancipation, proclamation, please!
Lincoln just said that to save the nation
These are lies that we all accepted
"Say no to drugs",
But the government's kept it
Running through our community,
Killing the unity
The war on drugs is a war on you and me
And yet they say this is
"the home of the free"
But if you ask me its all about hypocrisy
The Constitution, yo, it don't apply to me and Lady Liberty,
stupid ***** lied to me
Steady strong nobody's gonna like what I pumpin'
But its wrong to keeping someone from learning something
So get up, its time to start nation-building I'm fed up, we gotta start teaching children
That they can be all that they want to be
There's much more to life than just poverty
This is definitely words of wisdom
I charge you with the crime of rape, murder, and assault
For suppressing and punishing my people
I charge you with robbery for robbing me of my history
I charge you with false imprisonment for keeping me
Trapped in the projects
And the jury finds you guilty on all accounts
And you are to serve the consequences for your evil schemes
Prosecutor, do you have any more evidence? ...
On with the knowledge of the place we've been
No one will ever oppress this race again
No Malcolm X in my history text
Why is that?
'Cause he tried to educate and liberate all blacks
Why is Martin Luther King in my book each week?
He told Blacks, if they get smacked, turn the other cheek
I don't get it, so many questions went through my mind I get sweated,
They act as if asking questions is a crime
But forget it, 'cause one day I'm gonna prove them wrong ...
The Amerikan dream, though it seems like its attainable
They're pulling your sleeve, don't believe
'Cause it will strangle ya' ...
Thought they had us beaten when they took out King
But the battle ain't over till the Black man sings
Words of Wisdom

I love that one. He really educated a lot of young black youths who otherwise would not have that piece of knowledge or even the motivation to go out and obtain that knowledge.
When I think of 2Pac, I think of a person who thought outside of the box with the majority of the things he did, and that is probably why he was successful. I think that very same quality is what is lacking in this city of ours. We have the majority of people here just following a script and living there lives. Its as though, if you live in the ghetto and have less than $50,000 in family income coming in then you have to sell drugs, use drugs, rob and steal, because the Government is not going to help you.
I feel as though if we take the initiative to do something for ourselves, then we can come together as a community and combat all the problems that we are having, coincidentally they happen to be the same exact problems. Once that effort becomes full blown there is nothing we as a community, as a people, as a race, a class, as a f'in ecosystem. The thing is we have to stand together and help each other out and not sit back and wait for something to happen. Not wait for an elected official to come through on a promise they made while campaigning.
That's what 2Pac was trying to say but so many people, especially white america, misunderstood him or purposefully misconstrude him.

Thanks for the education. I understand that Tupac is entitled to poetic license and I understand what he was trying to foster, but no one should be surprised that the term creates a negative image in the average person's mind.

This is sad and funny at the same time. The most ironic thing about this list is that I used to follow rules #1, #2. I still follow rules number #3 and #4 (it is my preference to be referred to by my middle name as NOOOOO one pronounces my first name correctly). EEEEWWW I was never fond of #4 anyway.
