and as he is attempting to intubate him, he gets kicked it the face by the shooting victims brother. This happened this past Sunday. Thankfully for an off duty Newark officer that was driving buy, saw the incident take place, stopped his vehicle and took action and assisted EMS and called for back up. This happened on a crowded street. So the question here is, Why don't the community stand together anymore, help out in stopping the violence, and take action against the the scum that makes Newark look soo bad when they see it go down?

When I read about people attacking EMS personnel who are there to help them, I don't get it.
Why would anyone harm someone who is there to help them and possibly save their lives?
Come on people, we have to stop doing this because it doesn't make any sense.
Things such as this make 911 a joke and doesn't help those who want and need medical assistance
I sincerely hope the EMS worker gets well.

And I'm sure the patient's family would be the first in line to sue UMDNJ if their precious son dies, despite the fact that his brother attacked his rescuers.

They need to raise the penalties for assault of EMTs and firefighters up to those for assaulting a police officer. Thank goodness this does not happen too often.

Guess what, this does happen more often than not. It has become so bad for EMS that they have police assistance on almost every call they get. And as far as the penalties for these attacks, they are severe but most judges will not impose them on the actors.
They come with the excuse that the individual came from a broken home and that they didn't know any better. It's a joke and these misguided individuals know it!

Man accused of attack on EMS worker
Tuesday, June 06, 2006
BY JONATHAN SCHUPPE

The friend of a Newark man who was shot and died later Sunday attacked an EMS worker who arrived to help, police said.
The shooting victim, Johnny Collier, 24, was gunned down at the corner of 12th Avenue and South Sixth Street about 4:15 p.m., police said. A team of EMS workers from nearby University Hospital showed up about three minutes later.
An off-duty Newark police officer, Cornel Irving, happened to be driving by and stopped to see if he could help, police said. Irving saw one of the EMS workers, William Muirhead, getting kicked in the face by a man later identified as Kevin Little, 24, of Irvington. Throughout the assault, Little was complaining that Muirhead "wasn't doing his job," according to police.
Irving pulled Little off Muirhead and held him until more officers ar rived. Little was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of marijuana, police said.
Collier, meanwhile, was taken to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few minutes later, police said.
Muirhead was taken in a separate ambulance to the hospital, where he was treated for cuts to his mouth and a dislocated jaw, police said.

I've seen several people high on marijuana react to situations such as this one. I'm willing to bet that many crimes occur when people are high and out of it. I think you'd have to be high; unless during wartime, to take someones' life.
If situations like this one continues to happen, EMS workers won't come to in the Hood when
anyone needs medical attention or they'll come packin.

the EMS worker who died, it was the person who originally needed medical attention. But even if the EMS worker didn't die, he was injured and these sort of incidents must end. Otherwise, when in need of medical attention, you may not get it in a timely manner.

The prosecutor’s office is downgrading the original aggravated assault charges to a simple assault on the Paramedic. Is this a joke or what? Are the prosecutors that incompetent that they need to downgrade every charge that comes before them just to try and get a conviction?
Maybe the Ambulance should stop showing up, or if they do, it be like out in Israel, with a “sub-gun”, or maybe the Cops should go back to the old school days, beat the crap out of the scum that they will be disfigured for life, or just shoot the scum and eliminate the animals. And when the dog house is burning up, maybe the fire department should run out of water, or not find a water hook up..
This just goes to prove how incompetent the Justice System is, and that how the scum of the earth once again wins. They can do any thing they want to the first responders, and we get no support or true protection from the system.

Check out the "pimps and ***" thread. They are too busy with personal issues to do what they are really paid to do (SERVE AND PROTECT THE CITIZENS OF NEWARK). I guess you better pack you a nine cuz they will not come to your defense.

When 911 gets an emergency request for an Ambulance, they send it out to EMS, Unless they have a confirmed report that the shooter is still in the area shooting, or that the scene is not safe, EMS responds as soon as they can. In many times, Newark Police is overwhelmed with other emegencies, and does not have someone to send at that immediate moment like we all would like them too. Just like when you call for an ambulance, we wish they were there as soon as we hang up the phone. But that is not realistic. It is very often that EMS responds to assignments of a shooting, stabbing, assault and they get there before the police do. EMS cannot delay patient care because the police are not on the scene or responding. Unless, once again a confirmed unsafe scene is precent. In addition, this incident took place just 2 blocks from the EMS headquartes and it was a simple steady day, so the EMS units arrived quickly, and before the Newark police. It is not the fault of the men and woman out in the field. It is the system. And that is the sad reality of it.

It almost sounds like you are blaming the police for this particular incident instead of the animal that fired the shot and the other animal that attacked the EMS worker. And yes, I am calling the two suspects animals!!! Just to show you that our police officer's are doing an excellent job along with our EMS workers, they even continue to do their jobs while off duty. They didn't just drive by and do nothing as some have stated recently.
Maybe someone will even state that the off duty police officer was harassing this poor citizen because he wasn't on duty at the time. It is this thinking that is passed down to our young people by other's that discredit the positive actions that are made by our everyday good people. Hopefully the injured EMS worker recovers fully and continues to do the right thing.
It is just a shame if the Essex County Prosecutor's Office downgrades the charges to a simple assault. I'm sure if it were the County Prosecutor that was assaulted that they would go to the extremes to get the highest amount of jail time for this "ANIMAL"!!!

The EMS worker didn't die, it was the shooting victim. Unfortunenatly, EMS workers, just like Fire Fighters and Police Officers can not choose the neighborhoods in which they are sent to. It comes with the job. That's why it's not for everyone.

The sad part of your criticism Thewifeofapopo is that those four officers, “to busy with personal issues” happen to have a total almost Sixty years of service to the Good People of Newark most of it dealing with Quality of life issues. And have always given One Hundred Percent in an effort to clear the streets of the Thugs who Kill your Children and or destroy there Lives with Drugs.
If you would like to point a finger at the problem look to those named in Pimps and Hoes and everybody knows! The Director and his Flunkies, this is not intended to cast in a bad light on those who struggle to keep what’s left of the Newark PD working for your safety. The good Police Officers and there are many of them are as Disgusted with what is going on as you.
As for not responding to calls, it goes like this. When The Police get a call for assistance they are Prioritized, unfortunately the most urgent calls being handled first. Due to understaffing, and last time I checked the PD was short about 350 Plus men. And unfortunately the Fire Dept is not in much better shape. Your Beef is with the politicians who take care of there needs first!!!

Our view of the police is shaped by our interaction with the police. If we've had favorable interaction with the police, our view of them is favorable. But if we've had negative experiences with the police, it clouds our view of the police.
Certainly, there are good cops who do a good job of serving the public. But the cops who think they are above the law because they are the law are out there and it sheds a negative light on the police force, for many people, as a whole.
If, you are a police officer, have you known of any instances when the police behaved in unprofessional conducts? If, so, did you close your eyes and pretend you didn't see?
From what I know of the police and their unprofessional conduct is that many in the Department know, but don't say anything until a cop's unfavorable conduct becomes public and then is when the Department does something about said conduct, otherwise it's do whatever you want to do, but don't get caught, otherwise, you're going down.

My personal issues regarding one person does not distort my thinking and concern regarding what is happening in the streets of Newark. I am very much aware that there are some "good cops". However, one bad apple spoils the entire bunch! The "vast majority" you mentioned are possibly dedicated to the profession, however, can you explain to me why our children are being gunned down daily? Can you also tell me why the gang bangers have taken over our streets? Can you tell me why is so many of your fellow officer's on sick leave? Can you also enlighten me on why the gang unit is not sweeping the streets everyday? Rumor has it initiation night is THURSDAYS, is there some truth to that? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE PERSONALLY TO COMBAT THE CRIME IN NEWARK?
It's good to hear that "YOU' AND THE "VAST MAJORITY" do your job "proudly" everyday. HOWEVER, It's sad to hear that someone is dying in the streets everyday. Where is this "vast majority"?
Granted you men/women have a tough job! and the "vast majority" cannot do it alone. It has to be done collectively! The internal corruption has got to stop so that EVERYONE can concentrated on cleaning up the war zone that has infested our streets.
Popo, don't get angry with me, GET ANGRY WITH YOUR LEADERS! Demand change! Hold your fellow officer ACCOUNTABLE for their illegal actions!. I'm not sure if you're from Newark, but I am and I have a small child. I don't want to be a mother who has to bury her son because he was a victim in a shoot out! THE VAST MAJORITY JUST ISN'T ENOUGH. THE ENTIRE DEPARTMENT SHOULD TAKE THE STREETS BACK and get rid of the riff raff BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
YOU ALL SHOULD FORM A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CITIZENS OF NEWARK AND STOP TREATING EVERYONE LIKE THEY ARE CRIMINALS. THERE ARE A "VAST MAJORITY" WHO WOULD ASSIST YOU IN DOING YOUR JOB IF YOU WOULD JUST TAKE THE TIME OUT TO LISTEN TO THEIR COMPLAINTS.

IT GOES BEYOND THE FOUR INDIVIDUALS YOU NAMED! THE PROBLEM WITH SEPARATING THE GOOD OFFICERS FROM THE BAD IS THAT AS A CITIZEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHOSE WHO! JUST AS YOU SPOKE OUT ABOUT YOUR LEADERS (AND I RESPECT YOUR COURAGE), YOU NEED TO APPLY YOUR SAME TACTICS TO YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS WHO YOU SEE OR HEAR HAS DONE ILLEGAL ACTIVITY!
I agree with you that you have to have strong effective leadership in order to get the job done. You can not sh*t on your employees and expect the morale of the officer's to be high. Everyone DOES not no how to be a LEADER! YOU AS OFFICER'S COLLECTIVELY HAVE A VOICE, USE IT!
I HAVE COMMENDED THE OFFICER'S FOR BEING THE "WHISTLEBLOWERS" IN THE DEPT. OPERATIONREDD, BRAVEHEART, CABALLERO DE NEWARK AND NOW YOU TONGUE! IF ALL THAT WAS STATED IN THE THREAD IS TRUE, THEN JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED!
AGAIN! I'M NOT HERE TO CRITICIZE!

Stop it Mr. Booker, we got the message …….

Responsible for making sure our children and not gunned down is not only the task of the Newark Police Dept., but also it is the responsibility of every mother, father, aunt, uncle, brother and sister. It is our job as parents and guardians to assure that our 14 year old sons and daughters are not walking the streets at 3:00 AM. It is our duty as parents to educate our children an be examples role models for them. Its up to us to make sure they don't end up in these violent street gangs.
Although some members of this Department have not have discraced themselves and all of us who wear the uniform, that does not denote that the Newark Police Dept. is not doing everything possible to combat the ills that plague this city. Also it does not mean that the Police Dept. is corupt.
I am sure that you have people in your family that have did things that you are not proud of, that does not make your family a bad family.
I personally know Police Officers who were shot, injured and even killed for doing their job, "trying to take the streets back". That said, we are out there doing our job.
If you think it bothers you to read in the Star-Ledger that another teen has been shot in Newark, imagine being the Police Officer who responds first to the scene, seeing that young teen with several gunshots wounds throughout his body. To hear him speak his last words, gasp his last breaths and die before EMS arrives. Then afterwards you go home to your family and those images of this young kid dying won't leave your head. That is something that more Police Officers from Newark experience than Police Officers from other Municipalities. This has nothing to do with the corruption of our leaders.
Fianally, I live in Newark. I was born and raised in the South and North wards. I care about Newark and what happens to her. Change is needed to better combat the challenges that disrupt the quality of life here. With the new administration we are looking forward to being equiped with the tools to make this a better place to live, work, and play.
