SAFE SUMMER INITIATIVE WEEKEND CAMPOUT
HITS BRADLEY COURT ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 24
The Safe Summer Initiative is continuing to bring its package of entertainment, programs and information to Newark’s housing communities, this time making an early start of its “Weekend Campout” program, rolling out on Thursday night at Bradley Court on South Orange Avenue, for 56 straight hours from 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 24, to 10 a.m. Sunday, August 26.

“The great success of the Weekend Campouts has led us to start this weekend’s event a day early,” said Mayor Cory A. Booker. “We had an outstanding time at Felix Fuld last week, and the warm reception we received has energized us to keep up the energy this weekend at Bradley Court. I look forward to bringing hope and empowerment to the residents there in our grand finale.”

The last two weekend campouts, first at the troubled Seth Boyden Homes, then at the Felix Fuld Homes, offered residents voter registration, job fairs, a DJ, movies, and 1 a.m. basketball. Bradley Court will receive the same dose of “love and discipline,” as one of the 15 “safety zones” identified by the initiative.

The Safe Summer Initiative is staging job fairs by day during the weekend, along with voter registration efforts and family activities.

Representatives of ACORN, Newark Youth Golf, Youth Build Newark, Newark Now, All Stars, Just One Soccer, the Newark Fire Department, the Council of Airport Opportunity, the Bronze Shields, the Vulcan Pioneers, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Emergency Medical Services, and the Salvation Army will be on hand to provide information and services during these events and all during the weekend.

Mayor Booker himself and members of the Municipal Council will also attend day and night events to support the efforts and hear community concerns.

There will also be movies, a disc jockey, sports, and vendors.

Other Safe Summer weekend events for this weekend and the one following are attached.

The “Safe Summer Initiative” is a partnership with Newark Now, headed by Modia Butler, designed to reduce violent crime in Newark, particularly homicides, during the summer of 2006, while providing safe activities for youth throughout the city and alternatives to gangs and crime.

Mayor Booker said the Safe Summer Initiative is continuing its outreach efforts throughout the City, with other events planned for other areas.

“This is our last Weekend Campout, but we will not let up on our efforts to reach out to our citizens,” said Mayor Booker.

[I keep telling my parents I would be such a d---head if I became a teacher....it's how my history teacher taught me history...rather than him telling me a particular subject, he'd have me research it and tell him the following day....tell you what though, it was that style of teaching that got me As....now it's my turn.]

Now, Karimah, you tell us what Newark Now is....I read that website just enough to know I was in the right place. :)

If you have questions about Enough is Enough, why dont you ask TE2, at least people know about his organizations whether they agree with it or not at least it's well known, Hell i dont see alot of organizations listed on their any way (pop, ras civic associations, mothers against gun violence, just to name a few. Can we say some people want to take all the credit. I told you say cheese for the camera, that's all someone wants, (fame)

Are you talking in regards to the mission statement"Newark Now’s mission is to equip and empower Newark residents with the tools and resources needed to transform their communities through neighborhood-based associations and tenant organizations.

Our mission is highly influenced by the Social Capital work of Robert Putnam and the Public Capital work of Richard Harwood. Both men are fundamentally concerned with strengthening the ties that create stronger more vibrant neighborhoods.

He'll you can have a mission and not accomplish it, I am very familiar with most of the organizations that are out here, but if theirs not enough advertisement how can one know about it. Of course now that someone is the mayor newark now becomes bolder- Im not impressed- Did i get an A on my homework assignment that i did in class

Listen in truth I don't know too much about Newark Now...I do know that after 2002 he did form it and was using that as part of his spring board to current day. I won't tell you that Newark Now does great things (or doesn't do great things) because I too don't know much about them. However...they do appear a decent group and if one of their founders is also a Mayor, what would be the harm? If Mr. Ellis became Mayor of Newark, would that make EnoughIsEnough bad because he's the head of that group and he's Mayor? I will leave the sarcastic remarks about my last couple of lines to Mr. Cub, Jazz, etc..... :)

CONSULT

We provide an assessment of what it will take to increase the capacity and effectiveness of an organization.----------

PLAN

We develop a strategic plan to guide and direct an organization towards the realization of their goals.---------Help yourself first, why is crime still rising

IMPLEMENT

In partnership with Newark Now, begin to actualize the plan.

EVALUATE

Assess the actualization of the stated goals versus the realized goals.

WEALTHIER NEIGHBORHOODS----------Are they still talking about newark

Since 2004, Newark Now has worked to build wealth in our neighborhoods through Asset Building Programs. Through innovative programs we have saved Newark's tax payers hundreds of thousands of dollars and provided much needed financial literacy programs. Our approach includes:----Save newark tax payers hundreds of dollars huh, that's why now your asking for it back, again how many folks know about this program
VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

Newark Now operates the largest volunteer tax program in Newark (2006 numbers).

FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOPS

Bi-Monthly financial literacy workshops are conducted to educate Newark's residents about homeownership, investments, etc.----------If folks know about this program why are the homes still in such conditions or are these private meetings, the public dont know about this

Dont make me laugh how many folks actually attend these programs, The VITA has been around for awhile now, so when did newark now take over

karimah

No, but the point is Enough is Enough has exposed it's name enough for folks, the public, newark, outsiders to recognize.

Example, If theirs a shooting you know what organization off hand is going to be their, enoughisenough, pop, operation cease fire, SOS

IF a kids it's hit and killed due to drunking driving, you know that MADD, will be their

If a child is gunned down you know that Mothers against gun violence, SOS, POP, etc, etc is going to be their

Im not saying that Newarknow is that type of organizations, maybe they do mostly fund raising things, but what im saying is their not publicly known

Perhaps Councilman Rice can shed some light on the Newark Now organization, since he was a member of that team.

Hey veryproud, i should get extra credit , i went to city hall for the newark council meeting and i spoke with a rep from Cory's office, he gave me a map of all the summer safe zones and also answered a few questions for me, he did mention the doors are always open, but i didnt have a chance to ask about the newarknow program i will wait until thursday-friday when their at bradley court for the summer safe program. Again i am trying to understand what it is that newarknow does so i can spread the word like i do any other organization.

Thanks again Mr. you know who at the office of Mayor Booker:)
