Racial Justice Program Attorney

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey seeks applicants for a full-time position of Racial Justice Program Attorney. The Racial Justice Program Attorney works under the supervision of the Legal Director to litigate and oversee cases involving racial justice issues, including in the areas of voting rights, education, police practices, discrimination in the criminal justice system and prison and jail conditions.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey is a nonprofit membership organization devoted to defending and promoting civil rights and liberties. The ACLU-NJ has a staff of 14 who are assisted by numerous volunteers in our fast-paced and friendly downtown Newark office.

Job Description

The Racial Justice Program Attorney is responsible for developing strategies and litigating race discrimination cases, including legal research, drafting pleadings and briefs, discovery and motion practice, and trials and appeals in both state and federal courts. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will be responsible for conducting litigation, working closely with and supervising volunteer attorneys who serve as cooperating attorneys in the Program's litigation, and will often serve as co-counsel with other public interest attorneys.

Duties also include non-litigation advocacy, including community outreach, coalition-building, writing and publication of reports, public speaking and media interviews. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also participate in coalition and public education efforts in conjunction with ACLU organizing and communications staff.

The Racial Justice Program Attorney will be responsible for identifying legal rights strategies in the areas of:

* Criminal Justice (address discriminatory imposition of criminal justice sanctions based on race and/or economic factors)
* Prisons & Jails (address inhumane condition in prisons and jails)
* Discriminatory Police Practices and Racial Profiling (advocate for data collection to be used to push for meaningful police accountability and oversight)
* Voting Rights (address laws and practices that disproportionately keep non-whites from the polls)
* Immigrant Rights: (address issues relating to ethnic profiling, detention, local law enforcement of immigration laws)
* Education (address issues involving disparate treatment of poor and non-whites in public schools, vouchers)

The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also help expand the base of supporters of the ACLU Racial Justice Program by working with the Development staff to initiate and implement special events and to build the project's base of supporters. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also be responsible for additional duties relating to the work of the ACLU as may be required by the Legal and Executive Directors. The Racial Justice Program Attorney reports directly to the Legal Director.
Qualifications

* Two years related litigation experience
* Strong understanding of and commitment to civil liberties and racial justice
* Excellent organizational skills
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to motivate and interact effectively with people from different racial, social and economic backgrounds
* Experience with volunteer-based programs and managing volunteers
* Self-motivated, reliable, and skilled at working as part of a team
* Public speaking skills and experience desirable

Compensation and Terms

The ACLU-NJ offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU-NJ compensation scale.
