Dear Newark Senior:

If you are a college-bound senior graduating in June 2007, have a minimum cumulative 70 (C) Grade Point Average (GPA) with a minimum 80 (B) GPA during both junior and senior years, and have overcome a personal hardship or significant challenge, then you are eligible to apply for a $20,000 college scholarship - thanks to the generosity of One Newark Center, the City of Newark and Municipal Council. This scholarship is aimed at students that have demonstrated resilience and academic achievement in spite of personal challenges or other obstacles faced in their lives. Applicants must plan to attend a four-year college or university in Fall 2007. Students from traditional public schools, charter and private schools in Newark are eligible to apply! Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, books, or transportation costs.

The Brick City Scholarship Fund will be awarded in June 2007. Eight winners will be chosen to receive a $20,000 scholarship ($5,000 per academic year). Scholarship funds will be directed to a college account set up for each winner. Winners will be required to use funds in accordance with scholarship guidelines and verify expenditures, update contact information yearly with administrators of the fund and send semi-annual updates on academic status.

If awardees do not continue on to college, drop out or fail to access the scholarship funds within 1 year, their scholarship monies will cease and the funds will be reallocated. Awardees must provide proof of college registration and transcripts before receiving each year’s scholarship installment and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 each year. Any awardees who do not maintain a GPA of 2.5 will be placed on probation and the scholarship will be withheld until grades improve to meet the requirement (failure to meet the minimum GPA requirements for 2 consecutive semesters may result in the loss of future funds).

To apply, please follow the steps below:

1. Write two essays*: A. Write a 1-2 page essay on how a personal
(Complete A & B) experience, hardship or challenge made a
difference in your life and how you used it to make
a positive change in yourself, family or community.

B. Write a 1-2 page essay on your future plans and include any experience(s) you have in community service or positions of leadership. Discuss how this experience will help you to be successful in your future ambitions.

*Essays must be 1-2 pages, typed & double-spaced with Times New Roman font size 12 & 1” margins.

Obtain school documentation of your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) from Fall of 9th grade through Fall of 12th grade (on a scale of 0-100) AND your attendance record for Fall 2006 from your school.
