THE TORTUOUS ROAD TO TERESA
PART III
THE Q FACTOR

To all the politico aficionados, grab the padding, put your hard hat on, start up your engines and get ready for the race of the year. Wait, grab some extra padding because the end result will definitely shock and perhaps start the demise of one or more of the political networks in existence.

Only a few weeks ago the road for Teresa Ruiz to become a State Senator was clear of obstacles and present danger. The Adubato machine and his minions managed to create alliances for the primary that consisted of “Mr. Clean” Mayor Booker and all the chairpersons and district leaders in the North, East and Central ward along with Hillside. The only projected resistance was in the South Ward. Bill Payne was in trouble and did not have (and is not known to put in place) a well organized campaign. Adubato bragged that no one can beat him in a primary (He’s probably right). The Adubato machine did such a convincing job that Bill Payne took his advice and decided to run not in the primary but in the general election as an independent.

The Adubato machine was also convinced that Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo was finished and not to be of any concern. Adubato predicted that Caraballo would buckle under the pressure and play “Lets Make a Deal” for a future Superior Court appointment and ensure the victory for Booker’s candidate Grace Spencer and Amador’s candidate Alberto Cortihuno. But a funny thing happened on the tortuous road to Teresa. The harassment, intimidation, arm twisting, hair pulling, backstabbing, deceptive tactics, meetings of strangers in the night, and the threat of losing ones job almost worked. But Adubato pushed a bit too hard and his Midas Machevillian touch may backfire.

Just as Teresa’s Senate post had almost been accomplished, the Adubato condition kicked in. Like the cookie monster, he wanted all the cookies and went in for just one more kill – maybe one too many. He could not leave things along, just one more, the last deal to put the nail on the coffin. The cookie monster wanted to eliminate any possibility of Quintana being a factor in this race by pressuring for an endorsement of Teresa and the Line A candidates while holding the PVSC commission over his head.

A classic back room “Lets Make a Deal” arrangement was made and delivered. The son of State Senator Nia Gill now works at the County and State Senator Nia Gill is exercising senatorial courtesy to hold up Quintana’s appointment to the PVSC commission until submission is conceded. Who would have thought that the once fierce and fair-minded State Senator Nia Gill would go to bed with Steve. Ah, but this Essex and politics is, well sadly, politics.

In what has become characteristic of Quintana he is gearing up to fight back. This would be his 4th campaign in the last 6 years. The word on the street is that he is rounding up his troops for a slug fest, digging some deep trenches, collecting ammunition, creating a triage center and about to stage a blitz similar to the fight that earned him the name “the Lucas Killer.” This might well be the only ideal time for Quintana to challenge the Man with the Midas touch and prove that the North Ward political boss is finally on his way to the leisure life of retirement.

Wow! This is quite shocking to me. The fiercely independent Nia Gill who gave Senator Rice what for on the floor of the legislature. The same Nia Gill who stared Dick "The Dickster" Codey down. Well, they say blood is thicker than water. The Adubato machine doles out the county patronage as, apparently, it did in the case of Nia's son. And that is one way that the Adubato Plantation has retained its power -- the patronage it doles out always comes with a price: Senator Gill did as she was told or else her son would have hit the bricks. County jobs come with nice perks: vacation, sick and personal leave; full health benefits; a pension -- the whole nine. Hard to come by that in corporate America these days no matter how cute you are . . . or who you mother is.

You know I have the utmost respect for you and your informative postings. This one just doesn't cut it. If you think for one minute that all this was caused by a a lack of an endorsement from the "clueless Q", you best think again. "Clueless Q" has shown over the years a dreadful get out the vote operation in off off year elections, and I know you know that. The man on the hill would never get caught in this mess over a non issue such as an endorsement. If Quintana goes thru with this it will be the beginning of the end. He will have alot of explaining to do to the community. And we all know what happens when the "Clueless Q" starts talking.

BTW- I stand by my earlier posting that it is Sharpe James who has held up the appointment of the "Clueless Q" to the PVSC.

North,

Despite these rumblings, I actually still believe Ruiz will win. It isn't so much that Quintana won't be able to bring out his core - I think he will, I just think that the Payne's are sufficiently weak.

We have not been in agreement often lately but I think this is a rather fair assesment of what is happening in the North. It will be interesting to see how the community responds.

Okay. Lemme get this straight. you think that two Latino candidates won't split the Latino vote and allow Payne to walk right in? Hmm... I'm not convinced. Got any more evidence to back up your theory?

I think Payne organization is soo weak it wont matter if they split the north and east- Remember- seniors are use to voting the Democratic line, and that will be Teresa-thats an inherent advantage that will work for her in the traditionally black parts of the district-especially if Carl and Bookerteam goes all out and support her.

This will be interesting-if Bilal wins his senate seat- they might fall back and let Steve fight this on his own, but i doubt it. The flip side-do you really want two council people to fight (payne jr and luis) for 3 years. It might be smart to see who prevails and stay out this fight, but whats the lesser of the two evils- payne or luis/ruiz-i think for bookerteam they will not allow payne to get in.

With voter apathy/low turnout -- especially in primaries -- the election belongs to whomever can get their supporters out. Big Steve has a well-oiled machine for doing just that. There are thousands of county workers willing to do anything -- without even being asked -- to keep their jobs in the pink in this flat market. One thing though, when this is all over, Bill Payne will not be going back to the Hall of Records.
