I just received a jury "duty" summons and I need some creative lies to get out of doing my time. Can someone supply me with some good (plausible) excuses (lies) that will get me out of this?

Thanks, in advance, for your contribution.

5, you kill me. Once I did get jury duty moved to a new date 6 months later because I had already scheduled vacation that week. Even as a lawyer, I get stuck with jury duty. No one has picked me yet to sit, though.

Hey 5,

Tell them you are a personal friend of Booker, I'm sure someone owes him a favor :D

If i was you i would do whatever it take to fulfill your civil duty. If we talk about justice and fair play here is your opportunity to give it a shot and make sure the right persons either goes to jail or is set free.

Army1lt,

That was good, but now your trying to get him locked up and then he would have not choice but to stand before a jury and be tried.

That's true TE, I'm sure the courts would understand that 5 is better off attending the streets then being stuck in court.

That idea should really work :D

Heres two good ones that got me out of Jury duty twice, if it is a criminal matter say you know investigators in the prosecutor office they will never check to see if this is true and if it is a civil matter Find out who the Law firm representing the case and then say to the judge I have a case with this firm... it is a conflict of interest, if it is a big enough firm with many lawyers they will never check it out and the opposing lawyer will dismiss you quickly.

Worked like a charm for me twice.

Thanks guys. I now have some very good suggestions. First up, I'll use Doofus's vacation trick. Then I'll use Counter's strategy. I'm sure between the two, I can do what most citizens do - neglect their civic duty. :(

I know what I'm doing is wrong and I apologize. I'm only human and the last thing the system needs is someone that doesn't want to be there. Of course, if that were the criterion, then 95% of the people called wouldn't be there.

I was called to jury duty. I was chosen to sit on the jury for a few minutes afterwhich I was dismissed by the prosecution. The case was a rape case and I told the judge no person should ever be raped.

A few years ago, I was called to jury duty again and this time the case was a civil case. The jury was selected and everyone else was dismissed..

It is important to exercise your civic duty. If chosen to serve on a jury, perhaps you'll be the person selected who decides the person on trial is innocent and won't have to serve 20 plus years in prison for a crime she or he did not commit.

...I showed up for jury duty at the Essex County Courthouse at 8:30 AM and was turned away -- the case for which I was picked had been rescheduled.

Or, the other option, you could just /not/ show up: when I was being turned away, I asked if they wanted me to sign a register to get credit for my attendance. I was told that I didn't need to do anything and thanks for coming -- apparently they don't track this information very closely.

Ken, very bad idea. Failure to respond to a jury summons can get you in hot water. Just because the idiots failed to do properly record you last time, doesn't mean they will make that mistake again.

Jury Duty Excuses Could Bring Charges

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) -- A Cape Cod man who claimed he was homophobic, racist and a habitual liar to avoid jury duty earned an angry rebuke from a judge on Monday, who referred the case to prosecutors for possible charges.

"In 32 years of service in courtrooms, as a prosecutor, as a defense attorney and now as a judge, I have quite frankly never confronted such a brazen situation of an individual attempting to avoid juror service," Barnstable Superior Court Judge Gary Nickerson told Daniel Ellis, according to a preliminary court transcript of the exchange.

Ellis, of Falmouth, had been called to court with about 60 other potential jurors for possible service on a 23-member grand jury.

On a questionnaire that all potential jurors fill out, Ellis wrote that he didn't like homosexuals and blacks. He then echoed those sentiments in an interview with Nickerson.

"You say on your form that you're not a fan of homosexuals," Nickerson said.

"That I'm a racist," Ellis interrupted.

"I'm frequently found to be a liar, too. I can't really help it," Ellis added.

"I'm sorry?" Nickerson said.

"I said I'm frequently found to be a liar," Ellis replied.

"So, are you lying to me now?" Nickerson asked.

"Well, I don't know. I might be," was the response.

Ellis then admitted he really didn't want to serve on a jury.

"I have the distinct impression that you're intentionally trying to avoid jury service," Nickerson said.

"That's true," Ellis answered.

Nickerson ordered Ellis taken into custody. He was released later Monday morning.

Ellis could face perjury and other charges.
