Police are swarming around Route 78 in Newark this evening as they search for an armed robbery suspect who shot at a Newark police officer, authorities said.

The officer was not injured in the incident, which began when he interrupted an armed robbery in progress at the intersection of Walcott Terrace and Fessenden Place shortly before 6 p.m., police said. The suspects scattered in different directions, with at least one man fleeing down the road embankment toward Route 78 westbound, police said.

The man turned and fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire with several shots, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect was hit, and he remains at large, police said.

Newark police, State Police and a SWAT team from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey converged on the wooded area along westbound Route 78 in Newark to search for the gunman. Highway traffic was not impacted except for minor rubbernecking.

The victim fled the scene after the gunfire started, so police aren't sure what if anything was taken during the robbery.

No other details were immediately available.

Isn't this Mayor Booker's neighborhood, right off of Hawthorne? I used to walk past it every day on my way to school (Weequahic) with my books and a knife/can opener in my pocket. Getting jumped and your face sliced up was a hazard. Now the knives have morphed into guns. :(

I was stopped on Rt 78 during the search, watching NPD officers search through the brush for the suspect. Hopefully, they caught him.
