Being that I work nights Monday through Friday, I find myself awake at odd hours on the weekends. 2,3,4 o'clock in the morning. I used to use that time to go grocery shopping at the 24 hour pathmark in Kearny.

But there were so many people on the streets all hours, and so many speeding, crazy driving cars everywhere, that I decided it's not in my interest to be out that late. The kicker was, one morning at 3 a.m. or so, I was at a light and a crackhead/prostitute was vigorously trying to open my car door.

But as of late, I have noticed that there are very few people on the streets late night/early mornings. And, I see many more patrol cars than before.

The thing that maybe some of you can help me with, is that in the last month or so, I have noticed many black Ford Crown Victorias, with darkened windows and " SG " tags all over the city, day and night. Sometimes, I see them with Newark black-andwhites.

What or who are these guys?

I thought that " SG " was State Government or something...are they State Police Detectives?

This past weekend I saw that the streets were virtually deserted. At first I attributed it to the weather being a might chilly at night, but even the traffic was almost non existant. There wasn't anyone standing around, loitering or, as far as I can tell, selling drugs.

Anyone else noticing a big change in the atmosphere, or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

It could very well be that the State Police have stepped up patrols in Newark. That combined with the sense that Newark is known as gun-slinging town and it ain't safe to be on the streets -- especially at night. Just my two cents.

If you have to drive around late at night, wear a dark hat with a wide brim. It is off-putting to street urchins who are unable to check out your profile. And, it goes without saying, keep your car doors locked and your windows rolled up. Stay on the main drags.

What area do you reside in ? If you dont see people hanging out of driving in the streets, those are the folks that's trying to live another day. But when I'm out late on the weekend, i see alot of patrol cars, I see maybe 3 to 4 in my neighborhood alone, not to mention the patrol cars that i see on my way home.

That's a good thing. I still think there should be more security measures at the school.

It's a beautiful thing and I hope it's permanent. Shout out to the NPD and/or State Police night crawlers. We appreciate it. Oh, yes, we really do.:)

I was driving around Newark around 2 AM today and I too noticed the increased police presence. I'm glad I didn't get pulled over because I'm not sure any cop would believe that I was giving a one-on-one tour of some of Newark's finer neighborhoods (Weequahic and Forest Hill).

Spoken,

what happened to you calling the tip line to tell them about the drug dealers. Since you live in the vailsburg section, how about contacting Ron's Rice office and see what he can do to help you get rid of the neighborhood drug addicts and dealers.

Hi Karimah!

I'm over in the North Ward. It used to be crowds of people in the streets all hours of the night, and the traffic NEVER stopped. 4 a.m.?? Cars were zooming up and down the streets.

...and it was rare to see a police cruiser. AND I live around the corner from the police STATION!!!!!!!

But now I see no one at all. It's almost scary because it happened so fast. It's like a ghost town at night, which is how it is supposed to be late night/ early morning.

I see many more patrol cars, but it's the black Crown Vics that caught my eye because they showed up and everything got....er...normal.

The other day I passed a NPD cruiser and 3 blacked out Crowns on Park Ave. by the Cathedral. They were all in a line, zipping down the street at a pretty quick pace. At first I thought the vics were cabs or something, but they are all new, the windows are tinted black, and they have the " SG " designation on the tags.

Blaximus,

Wow, I grew up in the same neighborhood (Hinsdale Pl). Even then, there were people out and about in the wee hours. There use to be a Blue Castle next to the Boys and Girls Club that was open 24-7 that was the focal point.
