View Full Version : A fallen cop gives rise to a quest for justice

There is an anger in Jerry Lane that rises up from his gut and fills his voice and brims his eyes, no matter how official and detached he tries to sound when he talks about the killing of Newark Special Police officer Dwayne Reeves.

"Are we saying it's okay to kill a cop? Is that what we're saying?" Lane asked yesterday outside Weequahic High School, the scene of the July 18, 2005 shooting. "Are we telling all those kids in there it's okay to shoot a cop? Are we telling them if they lay down their lives protecting the children and citizens of this town, no one will care?

"We used to have capital punishment for killing a police officer. Now we can't even get aggravated manslaughter."

All we -- the civil society -- got was reckless manslaughter and no weapons charge against Khalil Tutt, and acquittal of his alleged accomplice, Hassan Reeds, on all charges except those relating to the stolen car the men drove to the scene.

"Not even a weapons charge. Only in Newark could this happen," Lane said.

What a sad story!

I understand Lane's frustration when it comes to this case. How could it be that ANOTHER COP, WHO POSSIBLY DIDN'T WITNESS MUCH REGARDING THE MURDER, testify AGAINST HER FELLOW OFFICER? How is it that the Newark Police Dept knowingly allowed her to tesify against the slain officer without preparing her for this type of case.

Does anyone have in inside information about her suspension? Is she still suspended? I THINK THE ENTIRE NEWARK POLICE DEPT WAS NEGLIGENT FOR ALLOWING THIS OFFICER TO TESTIFY AGAINST A KNOWN CRIMINAL!

She didn't testify against a slain officer, she testified as to what she observed. NPD allowed her to testify because they had no choice. Once you're subpoenaed by the court (for the defense or prosecution), you have to go. Also, the NPD doesn't prep you for a case, if you testify for the prosecution, they prep you.

I feel that Officer testified truthfully to what she observed. Period. If she did not see him with a gun, then she didn't. I would not want her to lie just to win a case. The Defense knew what she was going to say when they called her. The Prosecutor should have been equally prepared in cross-examination. The case was not lost by her, it was lost by the Prosecutor's Office. They could not prove the case.

IF SHE WAS COMING OUT OF A BUILDING AS SHE STATED, THEN PERHAPS SHE MAY NOT HAVE SEEN A GUN.

IF NPD ALLOWED HER TO TESTIFY, THEN WHY WAS SHE SUSPENDED FOR ALLEGEDLY NOT INFORMING HER SUPERIORS????

BTW- DO YOU KNOW IF SHE KNEW THE PERP PERSONALLY?

that as stated in the article, that the ECPO looks into the relationship/s between the officer who testified for the defense and the defendants. Not saying she has a relationship, but I feel that it is an appropriate action to take.

I think we all raised a legitimate question regarding the cops relationship with the perp! There are many cops who know criminals, either before becoming a cop or after.

We're not accusing her of knowing the guy, just wanted to know if she knew him or of him or somebody she knows may know him or know her....etc.. etc.. Ya know!

As I recall, (and I'm going by what I read in the Ledger, I have NO FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF THE INCIDENT) and please correct me if I'm wrong, she stated that she heard the shots, ran down stairs, observed suspect running, and drew her service weapon on him. If this is correct, this leads me to believe :

1.) the suspect stopped and she may be the arresting officer and
2.) she apprehended (or assisted in the apprehension of) him and
3.) no weapon was recovered at the time of apprehension.

So if she testified she saw him with a weapon, drew her weapon on him and apprehended him, WHERE IS THE WEAPON???? What she did was testify truthfully to the facts of the case. She said she was coming out of a building and she did not see the weapon. I believe the suspect passed the weapon off when he ran.
I know the officer. Like Redd said she is a good, honest cop. I have nothing but respect for her.

Who are you guys trying to convince?

The only question the citizens of Newark would like to know is if she had ANY PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH THE SUSPECT?????? DOES SHE KNOW THE SUSPECT? DID SHE GROW UP WITH HIM? THINGS OF THAT NATURE!

There is no evidence that she knew him, grew up with him or anything like that nor any reason to believe that. I'm sure the Defense is obligated to bring that up if it was true and the Prosecutor would've had a field day with that if it was true. She is just one cop who testified to what she saw, and now you want to assume she knows him.

Who said anything about EVIDENCE of knowing him??? Myself and others POSED A QUESTION! DID SHE KNOW THE SUSPECT IN ANY WAY????????/

I DID NOT ASSUME ANYTHING, I JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF SHE KNEW THE SUSPECT! Do you know whether or not she knows the suspect, either personal or otherwise? That would be a yes or no answer!!!!

THE PEOPLE OF NEWARK ASK THAT "NEW POLICE OFFICER" GROW-UP AND LIVE IN NEWARK, WHEN HIRED..... WOW! NEWARK IS ONLY SO BIG.... EVERYBODY KNOWS EVERBODY!

THIS FEMALE COP IS A STRAIGHT SHOOTER! SHE IS MORE "NEWARK", THAN ANY OF THE "EAST HANOVER POSSE"... SHE HAS HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE. SHE STATED WHAT SHE SAW!! AND I CAN NOT SEE HER PUTTING HERSELF IN THE "LINE OF FIRE", JUST BECAUSE SHE KNOWS HIM! REMEMBER, A JURY OF 12 MADE THE DECISION. THERE WERE OTHER KEY POINTS OF THE TRIAL, THAT MADE THE JURY COME TO THIS VERDIT. TUTT FILED COMPLAINTS AGAINST ME SEVERAL YEARS AGO... HE IS PIECE OF SH*T, BUT HE DESERVES A FAIR TRIAL! THIS IS NOT TV, PEOPLE! ECPO HAD KNOWLEDGE BEFORE THE TRIAL THAT SHE WAS GOING TO TESTFY! THERE ARE NO 11TH HOUR SURPRISES IN COURT!

QUESTION: WHY DIDN'T YOU "GUM-SHOES" INVESTIGATE THIS BEFORE THE TRIAL?

ANSWER: THEY DID!

TWO WORD...........SCAPE GOAT!

THE "POWERS TO BE" ARE TRYING TO PRESENT ANOTHER "DOG & PONY" SHOW!

ECPO WANT TO IMPRESS ME.... LAUNCH AN INVESTIGATION INTO (EAST HANOVER POSSE) CAPTAIN COO-COO, SGT. ROD, DEPUTY DUMB-MAYO, FORMER DIRECTOR AFRO AND THE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS STOLEN. OR BETTER YET, TALK TO BRAVEHEART OR D. NANCE..... THEY CAN PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT REAL CORRUPTION!

OFFICER LANE IS A VERY GOOD COP... I UNDERSTAND HIS ANGER! YOU WIN SOME YOU LOSE SOME. SHE IS NOT TO BLAME!!!!

P.S. THE FEMALE COP IS A STRAIGHT SHOOTER..... I WISH YOU LUCK OFFICER!

I believe the word of both Redd and 4th Generation that this lady was a good officer should suffice and eliminate any concerns of her creditability or possible "allegiance" to the defendant (which clearly has not been established anywhere- not even at the trial).. The lady saw what she saw. It was up to the ECPO to convince the jury that what she saw was only a moment out of several moments. What the NPD is doing internally, now, is anybody's guess. No one is happy with the verdict but this poor officer who testified because she was suppoened should NOT be the scapegoat!

you are right about ecpo, if her story was somehow wrong, then they should have cross examined her to bring that out. If she testified to what she believed she saw, who could fault her?

Agreed!

I still haven't gotten an answer, but I guess I'll never no huh?

Did she know the perp personally?

btw- Why was she suspended again? It was alleged that she didn't notify her superiors that she was due to testify in court, but if everyone else knew of her intent why didn't NPD know? Is her superiors and fellow officers upset with her as well regarding the outcome of the trial?

Must be an unpleasant place for her when she returns.

btw- I'll reserve my feelings about the phrase "good people".

At a trial, they try to find any conflicts of interests, (i.e. knowing the suspect/defendant/witness personally) to avoid any mistrials. Since there was no conflicts of interests, one would believe (listen carefully) SHE DID NOT KNOW HIM! That's the answer, I hope that clarifies that and I hope you will not ask again. As for her return, why would it be an unpleasant place for her? The only thing unpleasant is she was unjustly suspended. There are no ill feelings from the officers.

Let me explain this to you "civil service style" (NOT TO INSULT ANYONE ELSE HERE!!!!!)

Sometimes, people LIE about who they know, even while on the witness stand! IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHETHER OR NOT SHE PERSONALLY KNOWS THE SUSPECT..........DON'T RESPOND!!!!

THE UNPLEASANTNESS I WAS REFERRING TO, WOULD COME FROM HER SUPERIORS!!!!! NOT OTHER COPS!!!! (MAYBE SOME OTHER COPS).

Let me respond on a "Bert and Ernie level"....
My 8 year old understood and I hope you will too.
If she knew him, she would had said so in court. If she lied, she would be arrested and/or fired. I know her. That's enough.

I ask again. Why would unpleasantness come from superiors or any where else in the Department? Better yet, Don't answer and stop asking.

EVERYBODY KNEW SHE TESTIFYING BUT NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT... WOW! AGAIN THIS OFFICER IS BEING MADE THE "SCAPE-GOAT"!

THEY SUSPENDED HER BECAUSE SHE FAILED TO NOTIFY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT THAT SHE WAS GOING TO TESTIFY!

HERE IS THE KICKER.... HAD SHE NOT SHOWN TO TESTIFY, THE NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT WOULD HAVE ARRESTED HER! PLUS, HER SUBPEONA WENT THROUGH NEWARK POLICE DEPARTMENT SUBPEONA CONTROL! THAT IS HOW A POLICER OFFICER IS NOTIFIED OF COURT!

CAN YOU FELLAS SAY..... "FAKE BUBBLE GUM GANSTERS".... THEY ARE AT IT AGAIN!
