An Elizabeth city councilman was robbed and pistol-whipped around the corner from City Hall this weekend after leaving a popular midtown restaurant, authorities said.
Councilman Frank Cuesta left Dolce on Broad Street around 1 a.m. Saturday, and was walking a co-worker to her car on nearby Dickinson Street, when an unidentified man came up from behind, police said. The man put a black handgun to Cuesta's temple and demanded money, according to the police report.
Cuesta turned over his wallet, keys and $1,000 in cash. The robber then hit Cuesta in the head with the gun, got into an idling car and fled the scene, the report said.
Cuesta was taken to Trinitas Hospital, where he was treated and released. His co-worker was unharmed during the attack, police said.
A city councilman since 2000, Cuesta is also principal at Elizabeth's Alexander Hamilton Middle School.
