It looks as if the promise of paid family leave will finally be a reality for New Jersey residents, after years of discussion in the legislature. The state Assembly passed the bill. It will make New Jersey just the third state to provide the leave.
The bill, which Governor Corzine has said he will sign, will provide employees six weeks of paid leave (its about time) ;) so that they can care for a newborn, newly adopted child or help nurse sick family members.
It would work through annual employee contributions to the State Disability Fund. Minimum wage workers would contribute twenty-five cents per week. Those who earn over $26,000 would pay $33 per year. Workers who claimed family leave would get two-thirds of their weekly salary, up to a $524 per week.
Critics of the measure, who primarily come from the business community, say it will inhibit new businesses from setting up shop in the Garden State.
Late in the day Attorney General Ann Milgram released a statement that the bill became law it would stand up against any questions of its constitutionality.
