This holiday always makes me laugh. Italians knowing the truth still celebrate this phoney discoverer. I would give them more respect if they celebrated the person who invented pizza than Columbus.

All in the eyes of the beholder, Pro. I had a history professor who said the only war he thought was justified was the Mexican-American War--of course, he was from California. ;)

I'll second the motion to honor the Pizza creator! :D

Columbus's "discovery" is one of the few grossly Eurocentric ideas that multicultural advocates have been able to successfully debunk. There are still so many other Euroconceptions that go unchallenged.
In all fairness, though, no one celebrates Columbus's "discovery" anymore. Columbus Day has mostly morphed into a celebration of Italian Heritage/Pride.

I don't even think the Italians believe the hype either.
I think its time we all allow that day, or this day rather, to be just another day.
But HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL MY FRIENDS OUT THERE. :D

5Reasons - you hit it right on the button! We Italians, at least those under 60, only celebrate today as an Italian Heritage day because after that who could we celebrate...Benito Mussolini's Birthday? Well at least the Italian people realized what a creep Mussolini was and changed sides when the Americans came in, making it a wee bit easier to get to Hitler.

Nothing wrong with having pride in one's culture. While some may look at ethnic pride as divisive, I look at it as reaffirming who we are. Each culture brings something to the table of humanity, although I am not a nihilist in this matter. Not all cultures contribute equally - it's just that simple.

This is true, 5. Thank God for the Irish. :D
First of all, Benito never really changed sides.
Second of all-- I'm 1/2 Italian, and I like Columbus Day as an Italian Pride day as well.
Finally-- about Columbus himself-- who cares? Would anyone care about Lief Erickson day? Everyone in America has their "Pride Day."

Sorry for the confusion...I never said Mussollini changed sides.Heck no, he was killed and hung in the middle of a square by rioting Italians. It was the Italian people who largely crossed over and joined us

I have no problem with Italians or anyone else celebrating their culture. If it is about Italian pride, why call it Columbus Day? Why not just Italian Pride Day?

I never read any disrespect in your post and I totally agree that maybe the day should be called "Italian Heritage Day." Its the older crowd who still believe that without Columbus the world would still be flat. This is what they learned in school or from their parents and ya never will change them.

Joe,
You mean the world is NOT flat? Whatever you do, don't tell Bush. He doesn't want to here that scientific mumbo jumbo. You know, stuff like stem cell research, etc.

J. Interesting that it's seen as an Italian holiday. Three ships crewed by Spaniards. Paid for by Spaniards, supplied by Spaniards and manned by Spaniards. One Italian. There were as many blacks as Italians. Oh and btw they were all lost.

The ships were navigated not by Columbus The Fraud but by a Black African man named Pedro Alonso Niņo.
No kids yet Doofus-- thus I've been able to avoid SpongeBob Squarepants.
Ironbounder and Pro... both points are true. Sometimes its easier to let things be than change them.

According to my eldest Aunt (who is nearing 90), I have a great great great something or other who sailed with Cristofo Columbo. She said that the "Marinella" name (Mom's side of the family) means mariner in Italian and that the name came from my great great great something or other who sailed on the Nina.
I know this is pure folklure but I just had to say it! See there were other Italians on the ships (or at least one other!) :)
