CITY OF NEWARK TO HOST SPIRITUAL UNITY DAY
ON SUNDAY, JUNE 29, IN LINCOLN PARK
Gospel legends to star in afternoon event
Newark, NJ - June 18, 2008 - Mayor Cory A. Booker has announced that the City of Newark will bring gospel music headliners and local performers to Lincoln Park for Spiritual Unity Day on Sunday, June 29, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The event will feature an array of musical performers, including gospel
legend The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi, and will provide a variety of
sounds. Vendors will provide food, and representatives of city and county
agencies will be on hand to provide community information to attendees as well.
"This year's Spiritual Unity Day will once again bring together Newark's
diverse communities and talents as we renew Newark's rich heritage as a
center of musical and artistic expression," said Mayor Booker.
Headliners in the concert include: the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi; the
Hi-Lite Juniors; Carol and the New Stephens Singers; Lynell Andrews and One Voice; The Souls of Integrity; Bishop Hilton Rawls, Sr. and the Rawls
Family; La Vid Verdadera, who are performers from the Lincoln Park area's
Catédral New Ark; and Newark Idol 2008 First Place Winner Victor Cordero,
from East Side High School.
Performing for more than seven decades and producing five albums and
numerous singles, The Five Blind Boys gained their name in Newark from
world-renowned gospel promoter Ronnie Williams in 1951. They often
performed at the Newark Armory, Symphony Hall, and the Laurel Gardens. The Hi-Lite Juniors are a nationally-known contemporary gospel quartet from New Jersey. The Rawls Family is a Newark-based group, mostly comprised of sons of Bishop Hilton Rawls, Sr., Pastor of St. Paul's Freewill Baptist Church in the South Ward.
There will also be a tribute to Leon "Snooky" Lumpkins, the founder and
leader of the Newark-based and world-renowned Gospel Clefs, which performed from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Rain location for Spiritual Unity Day will be Hopewell Baptist Church, at
17 Muhammad Ali Avenue. The event is sponsored by the Department of
Neighborhood and Recreational Services' Division of Recreation/Cultural
Affairs.
