Multiple shootings leave 2 dead in Newark
by Jonathan Schuppe/The Star-Ledger
Friday October 24, 2008, 4:08 PM

At least four people have been shot, and two killed, in at least five drive-by shootings in Newark this afternoon, according to Newark police.

One girl was shot dead on Boyd Street near the 18th Avenue School, which was then locked down. Another victim was killed at Ridgewood and Avon streets, police said.

One of the injured has been identified as a 9th grader who was walking home from school at the time of the shooting. She was seen being taken by ambulance to the hospital.

An unidentified person was shot outside the Queen of Angels School on Irvine Turner Boulevard and a fourth person was reported by police to have been shot in the arm near Chadwick and Clinton avenues. Shots also were fired at the Seth Boyden apartment comples, police said.

Police are in pursuit of a white Infiniti SUV headed toward Maplewood.

"We're assisting (Newark Police department). We've actually been given information that there might be a vehicle (involved) on Route 78." State Police Lt. Gerald Lewis said.

Police have not said how many assailants may have been involved.

The random nature of these shootings is frightening and disturbing. The perps drove around Newark and just picked their victims off -- like they were shooting fish in a barrel. It could have been any one of us.

Shooting Spree Kills Two and Wounds Four in Newark
By ANAHAD O’CONNOR -- The New York Times

Two people were killed and four were wounded, at least one of them critically, in a rash of drive-by shootings in Newark on Friday afternoon that lasted just under an hour, the police said. At least three of the attacks were near schools.

The violence began about 2:30 pm, carried out by three people who drove around Newark firing at pedestrians seemingly at random, Detective Todd McClendon of the Newark Police Department said. Officers chased the car, a white Infiniti S.U.V., through the city during the shootings, but it evaded them and they were still searching for it last night.

“We have extensive video surveillance of the vehicle,” said Garry McCarthy, the Newark police director. “We believe all the shootings are linked and have recovered extensive ballistics evidence.”

The authorities said that the first victim, whose name they did not immediately release, was a 20-year-old man who was shot and killed on Ridgewood Avenue shortly after 2:30 p.m. Fifteen minutes later, a 27-year-old man was shot in the arm near Chadwick and Clinton Avenues. He survived, but five minutes later, a 24-year-old woman was fatally shot as the S.U.V. drove past her near the corner of Boyd Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue.

As people rushed to the woman’s aid, the S.U.V. raced toward Irvine Turner Boulevard nearby and began picking off younger victims. The police said a ninth grader was shot as she walked home from school and a 16-year-old boy was shot in the torso outside Central High School. There was also a shooting near a housing complex, with no victims, the police said.

None of the victims’ names were released last night. Officials said that one survivor appeared to be in critical condition.

Newark, the state’s largest city, has been rocked by gang violence and a series of murders in recent years, including a shooting in a schoolyard last year that claimed the lives of three college students. Many local officials considered those killings a turning point and began pushing for new efforts to cut crime, including the installation of at least 32 surveillance cameras. Last year, the city’s crime figures began to drop, and city officials say the number of murders this year may fall below last year’s total.

Eighty-three people were murdered in Newark in 2007, compared with 52 so far this year.

“This is not Newark,” Mayor Cory A. Booker said in response to the shootings on Friday, according to the Associated Press. “We are a city of peace and a city of strength.”

One of the shootings on Friday took place outside the Queen of Angels Church on Irvine Turner Boulevard, where 175 students attend classes from kindergarten to eighth grade. Francine Sykes, a receptionist at the school for 32 years, said that no one in the school had heard any gunshots and that officials had closed one of two school entrances on the boulevard after learning of the shooting. None of the students were injured.

“It was nerve-racking and it was aggravating because I don’t understand why,” Ms. Sykes said. “Anything could have happened. We could have been outside; our parents could have been picking up their children.”

Another shooting was reported near the 18th Avenue School of Science and Technology, at 229 18th Avenue in the Central Ward, which has about 325 students from prekindergarten to eighth grade.

A man who answered the phone there said that “all of our students are fine and we’re safe.”

The police did not release any information on the fourth survivor.

Winnie Hu contributed reporting.

A couple of the people shot at by the occupants of the white Infiniti SUV have described the shooters as Hispanic males. Again for some reason the Newark PD has refused to release this information or the identities of those they have arrested to the public. The question must be asked....why????

I have read all the latest news reports looking for anywhere where they are saying that some victims described the shooters as young Hispanic males and I see absolutely none.

Aside from the fact that if the shooters doing these random drive-bys were young Black males the police would have plastered their description all over the media in an attempt to get the public's help to find them. Since yesterday where are the physical descriptions of the shooters? 5 shootings and no one saw their faces? Well a few of them did.

This is starting to be a pattern. First the college students in Vailburg and now a possible Latino gang link in these random shootings. If the shooters are actually Hispanic (as some victims have reported to police) then this is most certainly a gang action short and simple.

When someone is shot in a Bloods or Crips related incident not only do they release the names of the victims but also of the suspected shooter. When its possibly an MS-13 gang action in Newark its a whole different story......Bad mistake by the Newark PD......again.

The police are on the look out for two separate groups of shooters and one group is Black. Police were also looking for a group of 3 Black males robbing people in various vehicles. Let's wait and see about the white Infiniti. I hope I'm wrong.

to respond to your question about why not publicize on the suspects' identities, my first thought was that if it was MS-13, the last thing I'd want to do is talk about these guys and give them more press. It just achieves what they want which is a reputation and fear.

As for the shootings, they are pretty disturbing, especially in light of all the progress that the city had been making. I hate to see this happen as it only perpetuates one storyline in Newark, and a negative one at that.

We all have to start fighting back against this. I am not sure how, but we must do something, together.

May we also all take a moment to send our thoughts and prayers to the loved ones dealing with this tragedy and those who are recovering.

Let us honor them with action.

I just dont get it, then there was reports that they lost them on Route 78-

This is why you need a chief of police and police director- especially if the director is out of town. I hope moral isnt low because of this internal feud.

2 arrested in connection with Newark shootings

Two men were arrested this morning in connection with a string of shootings in Newark on Friday afternoon that left two people dead and two others injured, two law enforcement sources said.

http://blog.nj.com/ledgerupdates_impact/2008/10/large_REACT.jpg
Noah K. Murray/The Star-LedgerNadisha Green, girlfriend of shooting victim Quadir Burroughs, reacts to the shooting outside University Hospital in Newark on Friday.

The two 20-year-old Newark men were charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses. The sources -- who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation -- said the men were taken into custody during pre-dawn raids at homes on South 14th Street and Renner Avenue.

Investigators recovered two handguns from the South 14th Street home, a .40 caliber and a 9mm, and ballistics tests were being conducted to determine if either gun was used in the shootings, which erupted over a 45-minute period, the sources said.

The drive-bys began at about 2:15 p.m. at the Seth Boyden housing project with a burst of gunfire that did not hit anyone.

The men who were arrested were charged in connection with just one of the shootings, but the sources would not say which one.

Investigators were working today to gather evidence they would need to charge the two men with the murders, the sources said. They were also trying to determine if the incidents were related to gang activity, they said.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy would not comment on the investigation today. On Friday, police said a white Infiniti SUV with a temporary license plate taped inside the rear window was seen at several of the shooting scenes. Police chased the vehicle briefly but lost it once it pulled onto Route 78, McCarthy said Friday.

The vehicle was recovered today at the Jersey Gardens Mall in Elizabeth, one of the sources said.

Newark police are being assisted by investigators from the Essex County Sheriff's Office and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Police have still not identified any of the victims of the shootings.

However, family members identified one of the dead as Quadir Burroughs, 22, of Newark. Burroughs was killed 20 minutes after the first reported shooting as he walked along Ridgewood Avenue on the way from his mother's house to a friend's.

At the spot where Burroughs was shot, a torn T-shirt, with memorial messages scrawled in black marker, was tied to a tree today.

"RIP Q.B. Gone by not forgotten," one of the messages read. There were 13 red candles and one white candle at the base of the tree.

Five minutes after Burroughs was killed, a 27-year-old man was shot in the elbow as he walked near the intersection of Chadwick Street and Clinton Avenue. He was taken to University Hospital. No information about his condition was available.

Fifteen minutes after that, a 24-year-old woman was shot and killed at 174 Boyd St. The woman's fiance identified her as Angelina Evans, a mother of three. A twin, Evans was known as "Big." Her sister was known as "Little," friends said.

At the spot where she was killed, there was a cardboard box with three candles and a note with the message, "RIP to my homie Big. I will remember the good times."

Mia Song/The Star-Ledger A memorial for victim Quadir Burroughs is shown at Ridgewood Ave. today.

There were three more shootings later Friday afternoon that police believe are likely not related to the drive-by spree. They included the shooting of a 16-year-old Central High School junior identified by relatives as Hakir Greene.

McCarthy said late Friday that investigators thought that shooting, on Irvine Turner Boulevard, was not related to the others because the Infiniti was not seen there and the shell casings did not match.

Green was in critical condition at University Hospital yesterday, said Jerry Carey, a hospital spokesman.

The two others occurred between 4:30 and 5 p.m. In both cases, men who have not been identified, were shot in the legs.

Staff writer Kasi Addison contributed to this report.

Anyone with information can call the Newark Police Department's 24-hour "Crime Stoppers" anonymous tip line at (877) 695-8477 or (877) 695-4867.

As an aside, the comments with the article on NJ.com, by-and-large sicken me. But I refuse to let a few people who could care less about humanity make me cynical.

That was my thought too. Where were the helicopters? If Newark's was not up, why not have the state police follow? It sounds to me like it was only a land pursuit and given the current laws on chases it is not a surprise they lost the vehicle.

Cory Booker and Company should also inform Newark Citizens about what may very well be "gang initiation", month, night, whatever!! It may be retaliation from the other MS-13 gang members who members were caught from the triple murder, who knows! At any rate, I give Cory a thumbs down for thinking Newarkers are that naive about gangs in Newark.

The helicopter, as far as I know, is stationed in Linden, which can be driven to in less than 10 minutes, let alone flown from. Given the size of cities in most states, Linden would be a section of Newark.

If you say this incident speaks to Newark needing the proposed heliport to be built on the doorstep of low-income housing (financed by Cory's cronies), are you sure having it there would have mattered? Did the helicopter ever pursue the white Inifiniti? Was it that the chopper got on the scene too late? If it were available, a simple radio transmission or cellphone call could have got it airborne, from Linden, timely enough.

A single police helicopter would be incidental to a proposed 24-hour/7 days full-service heliport, which will spew noxious pollution at the poor. Nonetheless, if it's about closeness of the craft to Newark, I don't see why a good-sized parking lot and a shed couldn't accommodate a single helicopter, obviating the facility's need for that purpose.

2 held, believed linked to NJ drive-by shootings
By DAVID PORTER – 1 day ago

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Two men were arrested in connection with a series of drive-by shootings that killed two people and wounded one in attacks that further shook a city trying to shed a reputation for gun violence.

The men were arrested in Newark late Friday, said Police Director Garry McCarthy. They were not charged with the killings or shootings but were being held on miscellaneous charges. Police would not specify the charges.

The attacks occurred Friday afternoon over a 45-minute period in at least three locations — one a half-block from a middle school. A 21-year-old man and 24-year-old woman were killed, and a 27-year-old man was wounded.

An official familiar with the investigation said the shootings appear to be targeted attacks, not random. The official was not authorized to speak about the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police initially suspected that the shooting of a 16-year-old boy was also connected, but McCarthy said Saturday that it appeared unrelated.

A white SUV believed to be the vehicle seen at the drive-by attacks was found Saturday, McCarthy said. At least one surveillance camera had photographed it, police said.

Friday's killings brought more unwanted attention to Newark. In the 14 months since three college-bound friends were slain execution-style in a playground, anti-crime initiatives have been implemented, including a network of more than 100 surveillance cameras in high-crime areas.

But a gunshot detection system that would alert police to the location of gunfire and provide information on the number of shooters and shots has not been activated. NOT ACTIVATED!!! WTH!

Mayor Cory A. Booker praised the surveillance camera system for providing images of the vehicle involved in Friday's shootings.

"They were absolutely helpful to the investigation. Those cameras made a difference in the case," Booker told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Homicides have decreased dramatically in New Jersey's largest city since 2006, when 106 people were killed and the Newark Teachers Union paid for several billboards that implored: "HELP WANTED: Stop The Killings In Newark Now!"

Through Friday, 52 homicides had been committed in Newark in 2008, compared with 83 in the same period in 2007, according to the Police Department. But robberies, burglaries and aggravated assaults all were up since last year.

Associated Press writer Beth DeFalco in Trenton contributed to this report.

The city had received monies to install a gun detector, why don't we have one installed yet ?

The Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — More than a week after three college students were shot and killed execution style, Newark's mayor will unveil a high-tech program aimed at assisting police in curbing gun violence.

The $3.2 million program includes gunshot detection and camera technology to improve officer safety and increase neighborhood awareness.

Mayor Cory A. Booker planned to announce details of the program during a news conference Tuesday. Also due to attended are Police Director Garry F. McCarthy, municipal council members and representatives of the Newark Community Foundation and the community group Stop Shootin'.

A city spokeswoman declined to give more details on the plan when reached Monday afternoon.

The Aug. 4 shootings have ratcheted up anger in New Jersey's largest city. The overall crime rate has declined, but the number of killings to date, 60, is nearly even with last year's pace of 63. The killings have prompted billboards in the downtown area with the message, "HELP WANTED: Stop the Killings in Newark Now!"

The four victims were accosted in a school yard not far from their homes. Terrance Aeriel, 18, Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20, were forced to kneel against a wall and were then shot at close range.

Aeriel's 19-year-old sister, Natasha, survived a wound to her head and remains hospitalized, but she was able to help authorities identify the suspects.

Authorities have said robbery appeared to be the motive.

So far, authorities have arrested three people in the case, including 28-year-old Jose Carranza, an illegal immigrant from Peru who was granted bail earlier this year when he was charged with assault and child rape. On Monday, a judge revoked Carranza's $200,000 bail at the request of prosecutors, and his attorney did not object.
Two juveniles were also arrested, and authorities also have secured a warrant for Rodolfo Godinez, 24. And while they're looking for additional suspects, none have been named publicly.

Shalga Hightower, the mother of Iofemi Hightower, said she's drained from her daughter's funeral. Noting that her grief "comes and goes," she said Monday that she's been overwhelmed by calls form various media outlets, including representatives from Oprah Winfrey and TV psychologist "Dr. Phil" McGraw.

"I take it one day at a time," Hightower said.

She wore a white T-shirt, made by her boss, with a photo of her daughter in a pink prom dress, saying "Sunrise, 3-23-97, Sunset, 8-04-07."

Both Hightowers worked at an assisted living center in nearby West Orange

Let's wait and see about the white Infiniti. I hope I'm wrong. Apparently, you are wrong. The alleged shooters are black and there is no conspiracy.

Agreed! Why wasn't the helicopter used on this chase? Isn't that what it's for?

^

what do you think, the helicopter just flies around 24/7? I think they use it mostly at night, you have to pick and choose, it cant be everywhere, all the time.

The helicopter has to come all the way from Morristown and that's why we need a heliport in this city.

Heck with it here, when these psychos act up we could be on their tail in seconds.

Chad1, are'nt you in the military? (if not, sorry, I have you confused with somebody else)

What does Morristown have to do with it? You certainly know that even if it was parked at cityhall, and the cops were sitting in it, "waiting for a call", you just dont flip a switch and the chopper is ready to take off. It takes alot of time to get a bird in the air.

My point, again, on this is if the helo is up, than it can participate in a chase etc, but if it is not already in the air, it does not matter where it is located, it wont be there in time. This aint Magnum PI.
