A carjacking started today in Hillside when a thief pulled a gun on a woman and ended in Newark with the man shot in the foot as he tried to flee, authorities said.

The carjacker and a passenger were sitting in a 2008 Infiniti G35 on St. James Place in Newark shortly after 2:23 p.m. when several Hillside police officers pulled up on a report the car had been stolen in the township minutes earlier, Hillside Detective Lt. Vincent Ricciardi said tonight.

When the carjackers saw the police, the driver drove the car onto the sidewalk, but he hit a patrol car that blocked their way, Ricciardi said. The two men then ran from the sedan.

As an officer chased the driver, he pulled out a gun and aimed it at the officer, who shot back in defense, Ricciardi said. The passenger fled in an unknown direction.

The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment, the police spokesman said. Information on his identity and his accomplice's, as well as possible charges, were not available yesterday.

The vehicle, which was recovered, had been stolen at Winans Avenue and Schley Street in Hillside, where the driver robbed the female owner at gunpoint. He and a passenger fled on Fabyan Place before ending up in Newark.
