Good article and an even better quote from Roth himself regarding the Weequahic Section of Newark where he was raised: "Mr. Roth said the neighborhood does not cohere the way it used to because massive ribbons of Highway 78 and the Garden State Parkway now dissect its streets. "The neighborhood was destroyed by the highways as much as anything else," he said."

I don't know how I missed the article. My grandparents were up from Florida this weekend... and they still talk about the old days in Newark-- with my grandmother (from Howard Street in the Central Ward) teasing my grandfather about all the "rich" people in Weeqwahic. "Rich" is a relative term-- my grandmother thought my grandfather had money because he drove a car. My grandfather worked 7 days a week in high school to pay for the car.

The best thing the city could do would be to put a NJ Transit station right next to the park where the tracks run through-- or at the very least connect the stattion at the airport to the community better. Of course, that would take vision.
