Default Two Newark councilmen backing Rice over Payne Jr. for Congress

Two Newark councilmen choose to back Rice over Payne Jr. to fill Congressional seat

NEWARK — The race to fill the New Jersey congressional seat left by the late Rep. Donald Payne (D-10th Dist.) has begun to foster divisions between former allies on Newark’s municipal council, and the fault lines could have a lasting effect on the city’s political landscape.

In a brief statement issued today, South Ward Councilman Ras Baraka and Central Ward Councilman Darrin Sharif said they were backing their West Ward counterpart, Councilman Ron C. Rice, over Council President Donald Payne Jr. in the two men’s bid to fill Payne Sr.’s seat.

"We are formally endorsing Ron Rice to represent us in Congress. We believe he is the only candidate in this race with a true vision for the future of Newark and the 10th District as a whole," Baraka and Sharif said in a joint statement. "We are supporting his candidacy in every way we can to send him to Washington to strengthen Congress and continue the fight for democratic ideals, and to be a vanguard in support of our president, Barack Obama."

Payne Jr. and Rice are in a four-way fight for the seat with State Sen. Nia Gill (D-Essex) and Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith. While Payne Jr. has the backing of Essex County Democratic leaders, Rice has been putting together a strong coalition of local support.

Today's announcement has a significant impact on the Newark political scene.

Baraka has amassed a powerful organization in the South Ward, where the Payne family has been the dominant political dynasty for decades. Today's move essentially divides the ward between the Paynes and Baraka.

"I wanted Payne to run for mayor," Baraka said by phone, but he added that was not the reason he was supporting Rice.

Payne did not return calls for comment.

Default More politricks

"You want Payne to run for Mayor",,, WHY? isnt he the same Payne that would not stand for the residents and vote on all things Booker?

Isnt Rice the same one that will not stand with the residents and vote all things BOOKER?

This is the thing that make residents want to swipe the ENTIRE administration clean out of their seats. What makes them deserve higher office?

Do you want people to believe that "IF" Booker is out of the way you guys will then be able to do the right thing for the residents? Baraka Baraka, im looking sideways at you now......

Default Brother to Brother

Im with you Brother

Unfortunately Newarkers do not vote as they should and are beginning to get hip to "rigamoro". They are use to them standing up beating their chest acting as if they will be "FOR" the people.

The politicians dont understand that the people show up in droves not because they support them, but because they are hungry and in need of the 50 or 60 bucks they hand out to them to scream their names.

Koolina its a sad state of affairs when we are voting for "the lesser of two evils" as oppose to the one who shows consistency, dignity, consideration, and respect at all times. Someone who will be FOR the people and not turn the other cheek when it best suits them.

I say neither will be a good replacement. If your grass is waist high why should I promote you to be "head landscaper"

Default Prediction: DP Jr Will NOT Defeat Cory Booker

So Baraka wants uninspiring Donald Payne Jr to be another Minor candidate for mayor...?

Donald Payne Jr -- the change Newark has been waiting for. Happy days! Happy days!
