Boss, Booker fatigue is real, and it will only grow worse. In 2014, Booker may be able to outfund folks, but he won't be able to buy the coalition he'll need to win. He knows that and so do most other folks with just a smidget of political instincts. I have no idea why he would make this statement, but he knows there's no 3rd term in the cards. He is effectively a lame duck. Be clear, strip away the money and what are you left with? His record! Now please tell me what in Booker's record could he possibly run on? More police officers on the street? Lower taxes? Lower unemployment rate? Effeciency in government services? Cleaner city? Anything?

The Booker experiment was nice, but it is over. It is time for Newarkers to get on the ground and do the dirty work of liberating Newarkers, one person at a time. It is time to elect someone whose SOLE focus is Newark. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want a lifer (we've had our fill of Gibsons and Sharpes), but I do want someone that fully accepts the challenges of being mayor without also wanting some of the benefits of the position. Is there really anyone in Newark up for that challenge? That's what I'll be looking to find out over the next 23 months.

Five, your post gets the stars. When I read the politickernj blog about Ras Baraka getting his people on the county committee in the South Ward, I thought one would think that Booker would have been devoting himself to building community support for himself. Silly me. Booker is completely detached from Newarkers. You never see him interacting with the people from the city he claims to love so much. And the thing is, it isn't like he doesn't have the resources to make an effort to build solid relationships in Newark. That's one reason why Booker has been such a failure in supporting candidates.

Why build alliances with a community you never planned to associate with. In my opinion, Booker never imagined running for re-election to a second term, but ole Frank proved he could take a lickin (health wise) and keep on tickin -- in office! Besides, the Ivy League set cozy up to their benefactor counterparts, not the masses. We, the masses, are expected to pay their bills, admire them, and quietly stay in the background as props.

Inkwell-

Well said, couldn't say it better. Sadly though if Booka runs he will win. If Payne Jr--nice kid was voted by the majority of small voters in Newark, well hell Booka and Batman could win!

At least you have a career plan B when you lose your next race. Geez, you're the New York Jets of Newark politics. Lots of hype and trash talk in the off season and then cleaning out lockers in the post season.

Next time you talk to Cliff tell him I said my licence plate had a typo in it.

Exactly, he knows as many others that he is bluffing, there is no third term.

I have an interesting thought there actually could be a rematch with James and Booker only it would be the Younger James! if John is chosen to fill the seat he still has to run in November 2013 he would have run a City wide campaign six months before the Municipal Election.

I can see a situation where John runs for at-Large wins the seat and then announces he is running for Mayor.

John has relationships in the North and East Wards!

He is a good debater and versed on City issues!

He is a War hero!

He Could unite the Black Wards!

and the Best weapon he would have is his father who is still loved in this City on the campaign trail with him!

In addition his father can create a 527 a donate as much money as he wants to run an issue campaign to help his son!

Folks this could happen and if it does would be very interesting!
