Unhappy King Sherri's: Clinton Ave

I remember going there as a kid...they had the best italian cheeseburgers and cold cuts...

I drove in front of there about 2 years ago and started crying...
they turned it into a hair salon...

Default Best Pizza....

Best pizza in Newark is still in Newark...Dickie Dees, Bloomfield and Sixth in the North Ward. They also make the best Italian hot dogs. I went straight to Dickie Dees on my last visit to Newark. I just wish they meant what they said "we deliver." They won't deliver to Pittsburgh!

Default Best Italian Hotdogs In Newark

Paul's on Clinton Place near Lyon's Ave. That place has been there since '73-'75. I use to go there when I was still in grammar school. Paul a black guy passed away a few years ago and turned it over to one of his trusted employees a young hardworking brother that is doing great with it. And he has Italian Turkey sanwiches like Italian turkey sausage, turkey hamburgers, Italian chicken cheese steaks, Italian fish. And the freshly cut potatoes (no frozen french fries out of the bag) is a meal by itself.
It's a take-out spot so if you call ahead (973) 926-8883 he will make the order and have it there waiting for you to pick-up.

Back in the day, Paul's was always good for an Italian cheeseburger, Shabazz Cola (Newark's only Black owned and manufacturer soda) and a Producer's bean pie.

Damn, those were the days.

Default Italian Hot Dogs are Really Newark Hot Dogs...

The so-called Italian Hot Dogs were invented by a Newarker who happened to be Italian. While I am Italian, I do not believe these hot dogs should be called Italian (although its nice to have our heritage on something that is positive) These dogs are very much sold only regionally. No one ever heard of Italian hot dogs in Pittsburgh. Therefore, these should rightfully be called NEWARK HOT DOGS! Lets give credit to where credit is due....Pride in Newark baby!

BTW: I make NEWARK hot dogs all the time out here. When I go to NJ, I always bring back Sabrett hot dogs. The only thing missing is the La pizz (the round "pizza" bread). I use Italian bread as a substitute. The only other thing I do is boil the dogs rather than frying them in oil.

I'll try Paul's next spring when I come to town. I recommend you try Dickie Dees too. But not really for the dogs but for the pizza. I cannot tell you how bad the pizza is here in Pittsburgh. Going from this Pittsburgh pizza junk to Dickie Dees is like going from living in Penn Station to living on Ballentine Parkway. BTW..where is Shabazz Cola made in Newark? Even when I lived in Newark I never heard of it.

Default Hey JoeFromPGH

I have tried Dick Dees. I love there pizza and Italian hotdogs.

Regarding Shabazz Cola: Funny thing...Shabazz Cola was out of business for some 15+ years. Today I was in the barbershop and saw someone in the shop had a Shabazz Cola. I was shocked. I inquired about it and was told the Shabazz Family is making the soda's again. Shabazz Cola for a long time was made out of the garage of the Shabazz family in the Weequahic section of Newark.
